What this does, and what it leaves alone
The rating in the yellow box is copied from the manufacturer's document for the build you chose, with the page it is on. Nothing here estimates a rating. The calculator covers 1,367 model years across 233 models, which is every one we hold a published trailer weight for.
The arithmetic is yours: your trailer's weight taken from the rating, and the weight on the hitch added to the people and cargo in the vehicle. The hitch weight uses the share Ford's guide says its ratings assume (2025 Ford RV & Trailer Towing Guide, page 14).
Three limits, checked separately
A trailer can be under the trailer rating and still put the vehicle over its payload, or over the combined weight the manufacturer allows for vehicle and trailer together. Payload and towing capacity and combined weight rating explain each one.

Common questions
Does this calculator work out my towing capacity?
No. The rating shown is the one the manufacturer printed for the build you pick, with the document and page. The calculator only subtracts your trailer's weight from it and adds up what sits on your payload.
Why does it ask for the payload on my door-jamb label?
The weight a trailer puts on the hitch counts as cargo in the vehicle. Many vehicles run out of payload before they reach their trailer rating, and the payload for your exact vehicle is only printed on its own label.
What if my trailer is under the rating but over my payload?
Then the load is over a limit. Each limit stands on its own, so being inside one does not make up for being over another.
